Watching the revolution pass me by...

I'm not a militant locavore. I'm not the woman riding my bike on the weekend on the way to the Farmer's market. I'm not someone who turns up my nose to a yummy, artificial Twinkie. I'm just...well, I'm just a librarian. I'm a woman who wants to take care of her family, but is overwhelmed by all the work involved in eating locally.

I grew up on processed foods and high fructose corn syrup. Lucky charms, Pepsi cola, Suzy-Q's, Chef Boyardee...these are my comfort foods. And I was perfectly happy with my love of junk food being my one bad habit. But it doesn't work for a budding environmentalist to not be concerned with where her food comes from. The way we eat is not only killing us, but it is killing our planet.

I have a long road ahead of me. And I will have so many set-backs along the way. I know this. But I'm ready to make the committment, to myself and my family and my planet, to change what needs to be changed.

I found this video of Jamie Oliver, this year's TED Prize Winner, to be especially inspiring.
